Samsung working on full frame mirrorless camera?

At least the guys at Photo Rumors say so. Check it out!

While this is an exciting rumor of course, I’d say this final step in the evolution of mirrorless system cameras is to be expected. I’d also say that not only Samsung is working on a FF EVIL camera, but surely the other major players in the scene (and maybe even those not yet playing) have their respective plans for such a system.

The problem with a full-frame mirrorless system is, though, that a whole range of new lenses has to be developed as well. And since full-frame cameras are mostly used by professionals and some enthusiasts, the cameras AND lenses have to be very good, or else the system won’t be accepted. Also, a full-frame mirrorless camera, whilst considerably smaller than a full-frame DSLR of course, will still be considerably larger than the APS-C based NX system, which is already larger (especially lens-wise) than the Micro Four Thirds system. So the compactness factor will mostly be gone – I’d expect a full-frame mirrorless system to be about the size of a current APS-C DSLR system – maybe like the Olympus E-620 or Pentax K7, which are among the smallest DSLRs currently available.

But then comes the next thought: A professional wants a system he can feel and hold in his hands – not something that looks and handles like a toy. This isn’t just about the look of it, but about the handling – there’s a reason Canon’s EOS-1 series has its size. But a full-frame mirrorless sytem the size of an EOS-1D or Nikon D3 makes absolutely no sense.

So the questions are: what form-factor would (should) such a system have, and who would want such a system?
