Picture of the day (January 14, 2011)

After all the masses of snow had melted away, the fields between our and the neighboring villages were completely flooded with water, looking like a giant lake. When I was walking the weirs with Emil, we came by a flock of birds in a nearby tree. Only later I noticed that one of them was flying into the frame when I shot this picture …

"Tranquility disturbed" | Leica M8 + SWH 15/4.5 @ f/5.6, 1/500 sec, ISO 160

As you can gather from the image caption, this was taken with my new Super Wide-Heliar 15/4.5, on a recent walk. I think I’m slowly getting the hang of the lens’ angle-of-view on the M8 …
I have it coded as WATE; when choosing the 16mm setting upon switching on the camera, most of the cyan drift from the UV/IR filter is being corrected in-camera. There’s some very slight colour tint left in the corners, but so far it doesn’t seem like much of a problem. Vignetting was added in Lightroom.

  • Lovely image. I have use the original screwmount version and it’s perfectly wedded to my M8. Since I don’t have a 21mm finder, most of my framing is largely guesswork. How’s the accuracy of the 21mm finder for you?

As for dealing with cyan drift, I’ve had good success with Cornerfix. It’s fairly easy to use once you have a reference image.

  • Thanks to both of you!

Chyn – the 21mm shows, as is to be expected, a slightly tighter crop than what the lens actually captures. But this works very well for me. Apart from that it’s very accurate. I’ve heard of Cornerfix, but didn’t use it so far. Maybe I should give it a try!
